How to Define Your Jewelry Niche

Have you ever felt lost in a crowd? Well, that’s the online jewelry world for ya! Every time you turn around on the inter-webs, you bump into another site selling jewelry. And let’s not even talk about scrolling through Instagram trying to find new jewelry influencers to follow.

So, I've been asking myself, "How do the real go-getters in this space make their money?" And no, I’m not talking about making enough to splurge on that extra fancy latte. I mean real, pay-your-rent, go-on-vacations, treat-yourself kinda money.

From my cozy corner (and endless cups of coffee), I noticed a pattern. The real stars either have their jewelry manufactured overseas - I see you Kendra Scott - or they're established designers living the luxe life with prices that make you gasp - I see you too, Irene Neuwirth.

Listen, designing jewelry? It’s poetry for my soul. But making it a thriving business? That’s a dance, honey, and I’m here twirling and tangoing my way through.

I love making jewelry with semi-precious stones, but there are many talented artists with great designs out there.

So, here's what I've done.

I've played detective with designers who echo my vibes. From signing up for their newsletters (shh!) to ordering pieces and doing a touch-test, I'm on it.

I’ve dressed up in various pieces, handed them over to friends (sometimes forcefully), and listened (really listened) to what they had to say. This journey taught me more about what makes my heart sing and what strings to strum to make it into a business.

Here's what I've learned:

  1. A defined niche is like having a map to your customer's heart.
  2. Pick a few designs in your niche and get really good at making them.
  3. It's OK to supplement your pieces with generic imports and other designers who fit your vibe.
  4. Stand out with your unique voice by creating lots of content in the form of pictures and blog posts.
  5. Learn how to market and sell.
  6. Shine bright and be the go-to expert in your niche.
  7. Less crowded spaces mean better profits and happier dances.
  8. Your niche fans? They're with you for the long run, cheering for every new design you create.

So, dreamer, carving your niche is like finding that perfect jewelry piece that just fits. And believe me, in this expansive online bazaar, it's your golden ticket.

XO,

Tammy
