Pyrite

What is Pyrite?

Pyrite, also known as Fool’s Gold, is an iron sulfide mineral that crystallizes in the form of masses, cubic, stalactites, and botryoidal. This crystal can occur as a secondary mineral, often in association with others such as QuartzTurquoise, and Lapis Lazuli.

Pyrite History

This stone was named after the Greek word “pyro” meaning “fire” because it can create sparks for starting a fire when struck against metal or stone. Pyrite was a common crystal to be worn during the Greek and Roman Empires. Archeologists have discovered amulets, rings, lockets, pins and earrings that are made from this gemstone. This mineral was also heavily used by Native American Indians as a meditation and ceremonial tool. It is said that Pyrite has immense healing powers and even thought to possess pure magic within.

Where is Pyrite Found?

Pyrite is usually found associated with other sulfides or oxides in quartz veins, sedimentary rock, and metamorphic rock, as well as in coal beds and as a replacement mineral in fossils. Though commonly found in Canada, Mexico, Namibia, Peru, Russia and Spain, pyrite can be found all over the world since it forms in all types of environments.

What is the Value of Pyrite?

The value of pyrite can be under $5 for a small specimen and over $10 or more per specimen with bigger crystal structures. Some increased value will come when selling pyrite as a specimen or in some form of jewelry.
